WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO RELEASE MUSIC?

I was recently introduced to a new analogy that is so helpful that I want everyone I know to hear it too. (Thanks, Rizik!)

Don't hold on to unreleased work for too long. Once the fruit ripens, take it from the tree and bring it to market. Otherwise it begins to rot.

I've observed this phenomenon over and over again with artists, and I've noticed that a really massive piece of this is that when you create art, it's almost like a postcard from a moment in your life. It's created in a specific time, place, and headspace, and we are continuously traveling to new life experiences and stages of evolution as humans— it's the nature of living. The further away we are from that specific time, place, and headspace we were in when we created something, the more difficult it becomes to fully identify and align with it anymore. You almost need to not only write, but send the postcard while you're still physically in that life experience and headspace. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing important details, emotional connection, or alignment with it.

In short, the best time to release music is while you’re still the person who created it.
